Difference about Galactosemia and Lactose Intolerance


Many people might be confused over these 2 terms. Some might even misunderstand that these 2 disorders are the same as both involve problems with breaking down milk sugar.
However, Galactosemia and Lactose Intolerance are very different.

Genetic Disorder
Body slowly loses the ability to produce lactase
Causes of Disorder
Caused by production deficiency of several enzymes
Caused by production deficiency of 1 enzyme, specifically lactase
Carbohydrate to avoid
Galactose should be avoided.
Body can digest lactose but cannot metabolize galactose once it enters the bloodstream.
Large amounts of lactose should be avoided, as the body cannot breakdown lactose
Treatment?
No known treatment, except avoiding food containing galactose
Commercial enzymes can be used to digest lactose
